Day 'D' began the liberation of continental Europe occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was June 6, 1944.
The military uses the term 'D-Day' to designate the date on which to start a combat operation. Historically, the 'D Day' refers to the day when implementation began Operation Overlord, consisting in the Normandy landings of Allied troops to be free Hitler occupied France.
The operation was launched airborne divisions to try to neutralize the German defense line to facilitate the landing on the beach.
The beach between the French towns of Sainte-Honorine-des-experts and Vierville-sur-Mer, 5.6 km was code-named by the Allies as Omaha Beach and was one of the main landing points.
The war ended on September 2, 1945, a year after landing in Normandíay six after the start of the race.
